The Detroit Lions will need to find a new cornerstone for their secondary as Carlton Davis has agreed to a three-year contract with the New England Patriots ahead of the 2025 NFL season.

Davis Signs a $60 Million Contract

Davis, who played a pivotal role in the Lions’ defense, is set to join the Patriots on a three-year deal worth up to $60 million, with $34.5 million guaranteed. This move reunites him with Terrell Williams, Detroit’s former defensive line coach, who has taken on the role of defensive coordinator in New England under head coach Mike Vrabel.

Despite the Lions making a strong late effort to retain Davis, New England ultimately secured his services, adding a seasoned cornerback to their defense.

A Shutdown Cornerback with Proven Skills

Throughout his tenure in Detroit, Davis was often tasked with covering the league’s top receivers, thanks to his physical playstyle and adaptability. His defensive abilities have earned praise from some of the best in the game. Cincinnati Bengals star Ja’Marr Chase once identified Davis as the toughest cornerback he has ever faced, noting his unique playing style and impressive coverage skills.

“Carlton Davis has longer arms than expected, and he doesn’t bend his knees much—he just hunches over and plays defense. He made some great plays against me, and I won’t forget that,” Chase previously said in an interview with ESPN.

Davis’ Impact in Detroit and Challenges Ahead

Originally acquired in a March 2024 trade from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Davis quickly adapted to Aaron Glenn’s man-coverage scheme and formed a formidable duo with rookie Terrion Arnold. His presence helped stabilize Detroit’s secondary and contributed to their defensive improvements.

However, an unfortunate fractured jaw injury in Week 15 against the Buffalo Bills cut his season short. Before the injury, Davis recorded two interceptions, 11 pass breakups, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries in 14 games.

With Davis moving on, the Lions now look to Arnold, Amik Robertson, and Ennis Rakestraw as their primary options at cornerback. Additionally, Kindle Vildor and Khalil Dorsey, both currently free agents, could be potential returnees to help reinforce the secondary.

As the Patriots add Davis to their defensive arsenal, the Lions must now decide how to fill the void left by their top cornerback.
